OCGA Plans for the 2020-21 Winter Holiday Closure

In observance of the UCLA 2020-21 Winter Holiday Closure, the Office of Contract and Grant Administration (OCGA) will close at 5:00 PM on Friday 12/18/2020 and will reopen at 8:00 AM on Monday 01/04/2021. Proposals with sponsor due dates between 12/17/2020 and 12/31/2020 must be submitted to OCGA no later than 8:00 AM on Monday 12/14/2020. Applications and other inquiries received on 12/17/2020 and 12/18/2020 will be reviewed beginning 01/04/2021.

Virtual Workshop on Computational Mechanics and Sciences (Jan. 26-29, 2021)

The University of California San Diego and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are organizing a joint-workshop on computational mechanics and sciences geared towards women researchers. This is an inclusive virtual workshop and open to everyone interested. LANL has convened the Regional Academic Collaboration (ReACt) collective with selected universities in the Southwest Region. ReACt seeks to facilitate increased collaborative multidisciplinary resarch and academic interaction between LANL and regional universities. 

The primary goals of this workshop are:

Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto Circulates Information about the Impact of Limited Stay at Home Order on Essential Research

On November 21, 2020, Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto shared information regarding the impact of the Limited Stay at Home Order on approved research activities. As part of the communication, VC Wakimoto noted that staff and students working on research for a PI are considered part of the essential workforce based on approval of their Research Operational Plans. As such, these staff and students do not need to be sent home during the 10:00pm to 5:00am curfew currently in place.

Request for Comments on UCLA Policy 921

On November 12, 2020, Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto informed the UCLA community about changes made to UCLA Policy 921: Accepting Support for Research from Nongovernmental Organizations. VC Wakimoto encourages faculty and staff to review the proposed draft posted on the APPS Under Review web page and submit comments with feedback by Saturday, December 12, 2020.

On November 5, 2020, Michael Levine, the UCLA Emeriti Association Award Selection Committee and Vice Chancellor for Academic Personnel, shared a call for nominations with UCLA Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Faculty, Emeriti, and Administrative Officers for for the 2020 – 2021 Dickson Emeritus Professorship Award and the Carole E. Goldberg Emeriti Service Award.

Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto Circulates Information about Export Control Regulations at UCLA

On November 5, 2020, Vice Chancellor for Research Roger Wakimoto shared an update about export control regulations. The BruinPost follows up on a previous communication in August 2020 by UCLA’s Export Control Officer about the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR). As part of the communication, VC Wakimoto encourages the UCLA community to seek guidance on any export control matter from UCLA’s Export Control team at export.controls@research.ucla.edu.

On Monday, November 23, 2020, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities is hosting a virtual town hall with Arthur Lupia, head of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE). He will discuss the NSF SBE’s priorities, funding landscape, collaboration and program opportunities, including those relevant to the NSF-wide Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Big Idea, proposal development best practices and student opportunities.

Vice Chancellor for Research Roger M. Wakimoto Hosts Third Research Ramp-Up Town Hall

On September 23, 2020, Roger M. Wakimoto, UCLA vice chancellor for research and creative activities provided updates and answered questions about UCLA's ongoing efforts to resume on-campus research activities during COVID-19. Vice Chancellor Wakimoto was joined by Vice Chancellors Michael J. Beck, Michael S. Levine and members of his leadership team during the Q&A session to address selected audience questions.

2021-22 Call for Applications for the UC President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to the diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.
