About the OVCR
Young Hall

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) is designed to provide logistical support, policy guidance, strategic advice, and assistance in building relationships in furtherance of the UCLA research enterprise. The subsidiary offices described below help to administer and support research conducted at UCLA; to oversee the compliance of campus research with federal, state and university regulations; and to facilitate relations between University researchers and external organizations (funding agencies, charitable foundations, and private industry).

ABOUT RESEARCH AT UCLA
Environment

Research is at the core of our mission as a public university. Every day, each one of us is helped by a research breakthrough that UCLA faculty, scientists or students have created or discovered. Eradicating poverty. Eliminating disease. Expanding access to education. Developing new energy sources. At UCLA, we’re not afraid to strive for monumental achievements. In fact, we do it every day.

BIG DATA AT UCLA
Big Data

Big Data is an emerging pillar of modern scientific discovery, involving the use of extremely large and complex datasets, requiring new and/or non-traditional methods for data collection, storage, analysis, curation, transfer, visualization, querying, and protection.

Visiting Undergrad Students

We welcome undergraduate students from other universities who wish to participate in research or other scholarly opportunities on campus so long as they have a faculty supervisor.  In order to be sure that we have a record of these “undergraduate student visitors,” all such visitors are required to be registered.

FY17 TRANSDISCIPLINARY SEED GRANTS (TSG)
Digital Humanities

The purpose of the TSG funding mechanism is to provide funds to foster new transdisciplinary research and scholarship between faculty members from different departments. The two priorities for the FY17 competition were north campus-led research projects and projects involving big data.

Research and Entrepreneurship
Research and Entrepreneurship

UCLA RESEARCH PROVIDES THE SPARK FOR INNOVATION.

UCLA’s portfolio includes more than 1,000 active U.S. patents, and the number continues to increase. Campus research is licensed by established companies and start-ups alike. “Sandboxes” and incubators encourage faculty, researchers and students to explore the commercial possibilities of their discoveries, and to learn from colleagues across campus.

A robust entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to grow and expand, providing tools and resources for students, faculty, and industry. No wonder the Milken Institute ranks UCLA number 1 in the U.S. for the number of startup companies launched based on campus research.

Libraries
Libraries

UCLA'S ASTOUNDING LIBRARY COLLECTIONS INCLUDE CLAY TABLETS, MAPS, DATA SETS AND GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS.

Yes, the highly ranked UCLA Library includes 12 million volumes, nearly a million e-books and 100,000 current serial subscriptions. But the collections also include the clay tablets and scrolls that came before books, and materials in hundreds of languages other than English. Whether on campus or online, the UCLA Library takes the lead in preserving cultural heritage, making knowledge accessible, and building a library of the future. That’s why the Library is a key ingredient in the world-class research, groundbreaking discoveries and innovation for which the university is renowned.

Administration Overview
Research Administration
